All India Radio is world’s largest Radio Network it serves to the nation by providing utility programmers It various languages with the objective BHAUJAN HITAAY, BHAUJAN SUKHAAY...(Welfare of all, happiness of all) All India Radio, popularly known as AIR and Akashvani covers 91.42% area and 99.13% population of the nation. AIR provides information, education & entertainment, and also creates public opinion, as a democratic process, through its broadcasts. 

 

THE ORIGIN

Radio broadcasts began in India in the early 1920’s. The first programmer was broadcast in 1923 by the Radio club of Bombay This was followed by setting up of a Broadcasting service that began broadcasting on 23rd July 1927.

All India Radio also came to be known as Akashvani in 1956.

When India attained independence in 1947, AIR had a network of 6 stations (Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Tiruchirapalli, and Lucknow). There were 5 stations owned by the princely states (Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Mysore, Trivendram & Baroda) which later mewed with AIR.

 
THE PRESENT NETWORK
In 2007, AIR has about 250 radio stations and about 350 transmitters operating in Medium wave, short wave & F.M. AIR broadcasts in 24 languages & 146 dialects, in home service, It external services, it covers 27 languages 16 foreign languages.
 
AIR CHANNELS

All India Radio operates its services through :

  1. Primary Channel – Basic, hard core progs. for general & special audience
  2. Commercial B’casting Services (Vividh Bharti) – Film song hased entertainment
  3. FM Channels – FM Rainbow (12 stereo channels) & FM Gold (News Entertainment)
  4. National Channel - essentially a night service : 6 pm to 6 a.m.
  5. DTH : Direct to Home radio service : 12 radio channel, wound the clock
  6. Bhasha Bharti (for national capital Delhi, progs. in 15 languages.)
  7. Amrutha Varshini : Operating from Bangalore-classical music channel.
  8. External Services : Covers 100 countries in short wave.

AKASHVANI AHMEDABAD

These are the very familiar words uttered by our presentation announcers, and very frequently listened to by you, when you are tuned to this station.

Yes, this is All India Radio, Ahmedabad – Vadodara Ahmedabad and Vadodara are two different cities, but the radio transmitters is shared by both, Ahmedabad and vadodara, & hence the name of this station.

Vadodara was the first radio station in Gujarat, owned by the princely state of Gaikwad of Vadodara, was operational since 1939. It merged with AIR on 16th December, 1948 Later Ahmedabad station was established, which commenced radio service from 16th April, 1949.

Ahmedabad is the capital station Gujarat, and with its 200 KW transmitter, it serves the entire state. The programmers are available with fairly good quality in neighboring states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and maharashtra – and also parts of Pakistan.

 

UNITS OF AIR AHMEDABAD

 
  1. Regional News Unit :
  2. Prepares two Regional News Bulletins on the basis of news stories received from part Time correspondents posted in each district of Gujarat state Reports are provided by News correspondent for Regional & National News Bulletin and Gujarat related news items are selected from UNI/PTI teleprompters. Assembly review is provided by reporters detailing proceedings of Gujarat State Legislature Assembly whenever in session.

    In addition Regional News Bulletins (morning & evening) the updated news stories are also available on telephone, round-the-clock through the News on Phone service of Regional News Unit.

    Radio News Reel (Regional) every Tuesday covers regional events. Special discussions & Radio Bridge programmers on Political events are also arranged by Regional News Unit, occasionally.

  1. Audience Research Unit :
  2. This unit conducts audience response surveys various programmers broadcast by AIR stations in Gujarat to ascertain listening habits, audience reactions and the likes-dislikes of the listeners. The field survey results are analyses & are used in deteamining programmer policy.
  1. Vividh Bharati :
  2. CBS – It provides mainly film song based entertainment programmers through an FM transmitter. Most programmers are received from Vividh Bharti Mumbai, with Gujarat, produced locally. This unit accepts commercial spots, sponsored programmers from the clients directly, or through advertising agencies. Spots/ Sponsored programmers for any / some/ all AIR stations are accepted at an affordable rate.
 
  1. Regional Training Institute :
  2. The RTI at Ahmedabad is for the programmers staff of Prasar Bharti , to provide in-service training to its employees. short term training courses are arranged round the year for administrative staff & programmer staff.
 
  1. DTH Gujarati Service :
  2. Provides round-the clock Gujarati radio programmers. Available on TV sets by using a set top box and dish antenna, anywhere. Mostly the primary channel programmers are unlinked for this Between the transmissions of primary channel, Vividh Bharti progs. & special DTH programmers are broadcast After JAI HIND-the close down time for the day, special programmers on DTH Gujarati service are make available throughout the night upto 5:46 a.m. of the following day Due to digital transmission, the programmer quality is extremely good, irrespective of distance, as the satellite link is used.
